AUDITION INFORMATION

Location: Super Summer Theatre Studios

4340 S Valley View Blvd #208

Principal & Ensemble Vocal Auditions:  

Wednesday, February 28th & Thursday February 29th, 7pm - 10 pm

Sign in from 6:30 - 8:30 pm 

Saturday, March 2nd, 11 am - 2pm

Sign in from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm

*Our limited audition appointments are currently all booked - but no appointment is necessary, just show up during our sign in hours and you will be seen!*

For your vocal auditions, we ask that you please prepare 32 bars

of a contemporary broadway musical with a similar sound to The Little Mermaid.

If you are a dance who does not sing, you can attend a dance call on

March 7 at 6:30 pm or March 9th at 11 am.

Please bring sheet music that is appropriately marked with your audition cut and in the appropriate key.

An accompanist will be provided. No prerecorded tracks will be accommodated at the auditions. 

We prefer that you attend the in person auditions, but if you are unable to attend, you can submit a video audition through our audition form. Audition videos are due by March 1st at 11:59 pm and should consist of a

1 minute vocal selection as outlined previously. Tracks are fine.

Callbacks will be held in person except in extenuating circumstances.

Limited appointments were available (and currently booked), but not required.

Sign ins will be available as noted above and you are welcomed

to arrive any time in that time period.

Please fill out the audition form prior to audition date. No need to bring physical headshot/resume unless you are unable to fill out our online form. The audition form will be available at the audition to fill out if you are unable to do so ahead of time. Auditions must be individual - no duets or group auditions.

CALLBACKS & DANCE CALL

Callbacks and dance call invitations and materials will be shared following the initial auditions.

Dancers who do not sing may attend a dance call on:

Thursday March 7th at 6:30 pm or Saturday, March 9th at 11 am at SST Studios.

Callbacks will be held on Thursday & Friday March 7th and/or 8th in the evening,

starting as early as 6pm as well as Saturday March 9th all day. 

We appreciate you making yourselves available for all callback and dance call dates,

we will have a specific schedule should you be invited for callbacks.

Huntsman Entertainment is committed to inclusive casting.

All ethnicities, gender identities and body types are encouraged to audition.

Super Summer Theatre is a community theatre organization.

There is no pay for performers, but a stipend and comp tickets will be provided. 

PRODUCTION & REHEARSAL INFORMATION

Production dates for Disney's The Little Mermaid are as follows.

 Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday

June 5,6,7,8; 12,13,14,15; 19,20,21,22; 26,27,28,29

as well as a contingency performance on Tuesday, June 25

Performers MUST be available for all production dates.

Rehearsals will take place at Super Summer Theatre Studios.

Rehearsals will begin around March 25th and will take place on weekday evenings.

Some Saturday rehearsals may be added based on cast availability and needs.

Tech and Dress rehearsals at Spring Mountain Ranch State Park

will begin on May 24th and will include Saturday rehearsals.

CHARACTER BREAKDOWN

Please note - the gender, age and vocal range indications refer to the CHARACTER, not the ACTOR. Therefore, if an actor appears to be in the age range, can convincingly portray the gender of the character and meet the vocal requirements of the character, they may be considered for said character regardless of their age or gender. 

Ariel

A mermaid and King Triton's youngest daughter. She is obsessed with everything about the human world, and dreams of becoming a part of life above the water. Hardheaded, naive, and emotional, but also kind hearted.

Gender: Female Identifying

Age: 18 to 25

Vocal range Ab3-Gb5

Prince Eric

A human monarch who has no interest of taking the crown. A handsome, affable lad with a buoyant, adventurous nature. After Ariel saves his life, he becomes obsessed with finding her and hearing her voice once more.

Vocal range: B2 - G4

Grimsby

Prince Eric's British guardian. Droll, stuffy, and constantly urging Eric towards his royal duties, specifically marriage.

Flounder

A fish and smitten with Ariel, his best friend. Rambunctious but cautious, fearful of the dangers that lurk in and above the water.

Scuttle

A disheveled seagull and expert in human artifacts. Loudmouthed, optimistic, and a bit ignorant, despite his supposed expertise.

King Triton

King of the Sea and Ariel's father. Beneath his imposing presence and commanding nature lurks a harried single father who will do anything to protect his daughters. The death of his wife has also given him an irrational fear of humans.

Sebastian

A crab and advisor to King Triton. A musical virtuoso who is constantly distraught from keeping after Ariel. Despite his paranoia, he can't bring himself to stand in Ariel's way.

Flotsam

An eel and one of Ursula's lackeys. Oily and spineless, he will say anything you want or need to hear.

Chef Louis

The French palace chef, diabolical and violent. A culinary perfectionist with an affinity for blades, seafood in particular.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is an Audition cut of a song? An audition cut is selecting a shortened portion of a song to sing for auditions. In the case of our The Little Mermaid audition, we're asking for 32 bars. If you don't know how to cut your own music, you can work with any accompanist or vocal instructor to find a good cut. You can also check out the following websites for audition cuts readily available: https://performerstuff.com/ , https://www.musicnotes.com/audition/. 

My audition cut is a bit shorter or longer than 32 bars, is that ok? 32 bars is an average, we won't be counting it out. As long as it's not significantly longer or shorter, you'll be ok. 

Should I have more than one audition cut available? It's not required but it certainly never hurts to have more material available that shows off a different style or part of your range.

Will you have sheet music from the show available to sing from at the audition? Yes we will, but we can't promise it's the key you might be used to. It may also sound different than what you are used to. We do recommend you have your own music even if you are singing something from the show. 

When will we find out about callbacks? We plan to send out callback notices on Sunday, March 3rd. 

Will you let me know if I'm not cast? Yes, we let everyone know the outcome of their audition.

Do you cast teenagers? We do cast teenagers when appropriate for the role. But if the role calls for an adult performer, we will cast an adult performer in the role. We are not a children's or youth theatre. However, there are often opportunities in the ensemble for older teen performers!

Do I need to bring a headshot and resume? We've gone digital with our audition database so we will ask you to fill out our Audition Form prior to your audition. If you are unable to do so for some reason, we will have your fill out the form at your audition and we'll take photos of your headshot and resume there. 

Do I need an appointment? You do not need an appointment. We are offering limited appointments if you are on a tight schedule. Otherwise we will have an extended sign in opportunity to hopefully reduce audition wait times. 

Can we request feedback about our audition? We do not provide specific feedback about individual auditions. There are so many factors to consider and we anticipate a high amount of audition candidates. We provide the same feedback for anyone who asks: Casting is often not a position of "who did better" or "who's more talented", it's more like looking at a bunch of talented people with different strengths and challenges and seeing where they fit. We take so many things into account - many of which we as actors have little or no control over such as height or vocal tone... etc. There are times when an actor is lacking something specific a role requires such as dance or vocal skill. Sometimes one actor's casting is determined by another, especially with actors are in pairs such as love interests or sidekicks or groups or a trio. Or we're looking for a specific "type" and we have several actors who can fill that type - then it's just taste. Or their look. Or experience working with that person - for better or worse. Sometimes we need a specific vocal part and there are more sopranos than altos or visa versa. There are often factors at play that, as an actor, we can't imagine because we aren't looking at the entire picture like the director is. It's never personal and many times we don't have any advice for someone - they had a great audition, their puzzle piece just didn't fit in this particular puzzle. We would always encourage the growing actor to work on their skills and approach each audition as an opportunity for growth and learning and finding the success and satisfaction in the audition process.
